The anime casts Youko Nakajima, a Japanese girl who is suddenly transported to another world and eventually discovers that she is the empress of the kingdom of Kei, in the role of the main character; however, in the novels, Youko is only one of many main characters and her story is focused upon in only two novels.

12 Kingdoms. Oooooh I love this show! An epic tale of a girl thrown into a mysterious realm that is actually her home. The story is excellent.
The anime itself was really enjoyable.
The characters were all quite well developed, each (or most. Watched it quite a while ago) with its own background story.
The only downside I can think of right now is the fact that it's production was halted halfway through, so it ended up being unfinished.
I just wish they'd pick it up some time again.

You SHOULD really try this anime! This anime ftw, it's really really better than Fushigi Yuugi and makes it looks like crap. The main character Youko, she becomes a king, and the kirin is just so handsome. lol. Forgive my super passion of bishounen XD
12 Kingdoms is one of epic anime I've ever seen.
I agree that this anime is completely awesome. I kinda sucks though that you have to wade through the first three or so episodes of Youko whining. It's totally worth it though!
I would have liked to have seen more episodes, though. I had a few questions still.
Brilliant series wish there had been more of it though cut off very abruptly leaving you wondering what happened next. The settings were great and so were the characters well once Yoko stopped being a whiny wimp [image: http://animeforum.org.uk/images/smilies/biggrin.gif] The first 2 books were very good a little different to the anime though [image: http://animeforum.org.uk/images/smilies/smile.gif]
I love this anime and the books too!!! I would feel a certain void within without The Twelve Kingdoms. Fuyumi Ono is an consummate genius! If you have never seen the anime or read the books, please, PLEASE give them a try for your own sake!
