I only used iMovie on my Mac so far. It is easy to use and has all standard features, but not much that is good for advanced video editing.

The high end video eciting software for the Mac is Final Cut Pro, but it costs over 200 Euros, so I said "no thanks".

Most people probably use the Windows Movie Maker because it's free and standard on Windows systems.

I also heard a lot about Sony Vegas and saw many AMVs that were made with the help of it (which were amazing), but the better versions of it are also quite expensive.

Sony Vegas is like the king but it's not cheap. WMM is great also and free. Many people start out with it.

Final Cut Pro is amazing since I've used it. Very intuitive and has advanced features.

I did use Adobe Premier Pro for that short video I did together with Izumi. It's a good software, my only complain is format compatibility.

I like Adobe Premiere CS5.5, due to its GPU accelerated rendering, easy yet verbose menu system, ability to be doubled with Photoshop, Audition, and/or After Effects.

I've heard a lot about After Effects and many AMV editors use it, so how good is it? Does anybody have it and use it?

After Effects is a really good editor, but it's not something that can be simply jumped into. You have to be very serious about learning the program, and you'll need at least 12 hours of tutorials to get effects down pat. I'd recommend getting a torrent of CS5.5, since it's the most recent one, and if you understand that one, you understand them all. I dabbled with it for YTP once, and it's harder than it looks. One of these days, I'll do a tutorial. Trust me, it's nothing like any other video editor. Take that as you will.
