Question What makes a great AMV

Tell us what makes a great AMV.

Is it effects, timming, music, the clips, or something else.

Timing: in my opinion its all about the timing: anyone can take a few clips from anime string em together and slap a sountrack on it... REAL geniuses take individual scenes and slap them onto a soundtrack...

Okay, here are my two cents:

The music should fit the topic. So for romantic AMVs there should be a romantic song, for fighting scenes there should be a faster song with more beats per second and for sad AMVs a slow track that transports and emphasizes the emotions well.

Especially for fighting AMVs it is great if the moves of the fighting persons match the music, so if there is a breakdown in the song, that there is an epic attack in the video at the same time and such. Or if there are many fast moves and hits, they should match the beat of the music if possible.

The AMV should also have a certain topic and stick to it the entire time and not have any other random scenes in it.

Okay, I think this is more what I regard as the perfect AMV rather than a great AMV. It doesn't need all of this in my opinion to already make an AMV a great one.

Feel free to agree or disagree.

time. effort. paling if you can see that the editor has put some thords in to it and not just thrower some clips in to the editing program and put some music to it.
that is a good start

Err, well I've only made one AMV so I don't know how valuable my input will be, but I started with a song that I wanted to make an AMV for, then picked an anime, but I'm guessing that's not a very normal way around. Once I this set in stone, I hunted for appropriate scenes and lots of them so I had plenty of material to choose from! (I was going for fight scenes, not a whole lot of though required). I then decided which points in the song required fast paced moments and which bits required something slower, once I had done this it was just a case of three hours getting all the timing and lengths of things correct, which is a bitch to do on windows live.....but I had a lot of fun doing it!

Anyway, I think what I did turned out pretty good, you can see it here:

It's not a great AMV but that's the best advice I can give from experience :P But I do think taking the time to make sure you're happy with the timings is crucial, nothing is more annoying than watching an AMV that has had no care put into the editing....

I shall keep up with this thread for ideas on how to improve in future

Haven't made an AMV in my whole damn life.
so this maybe a n00b reply...

but yea,, TIMING is most important for me. the effects just enhances the experience..but timing holds more priority. i mean, what use of a good song, astonishing effects , but no timing or "synchronising" .

anyone can pick a good song, good scenes/clips, ..everyone can put great effects..but good timing requires skills and great deal of imagination .

anyways, thats me .. again, i ain't an AMV maker so i maybe wrong

I agree, good timing is the main thing that makes a great AMV.

And don't worry Dragon, I'm not experienced in making AMVs either and just went ahead and said what I thought about this.

I think timing and music count. If you can match the music to the video and its meaning and then time it all to create a wonderful AMV, then that to me is a great video.

My vote goes to timing as well. Music and finding the right scenes are important, but the timing really brings it all together and decides if the video is excellent or off.

I guess if i had any attempt on it...i want the mood to match...have the song fit the scene so the watcher believes the song tells the story of the characters or the conflict...or just all around carnage and awesomeness.
