Default ASD thread.

ASD support thread.
This thread is not for anyone to genaraly discuss these conditions, we have a thread for that here Autism
This thread is for the people with ASD to talk about life, and how its affected by their condition with each other.
ALso sharing any stratages for managing, tips, or support would be usefull.

ASD is a group of conditions including Autism, Asperges , and more reacently dyslexia.

Its called a spectrum because it has recently been discovered that they are all connected, and someone, may have one, some or all of the conditions, in different proportions, or in a more defined place in the spectrum.
This means that no 2 people, are exactly alike in the way it affects them.

Lets start with the asumption, that these are not disability, but a difference in how our brains are wired. Because of that difference, we can be worse than normal at some things, but alot better at others.
A dyslexic is the most well known example. The diagnoses requires a much higher inteligence, then the ablities in reading and writing would indicate.
Ok heres one more, Einstein, both dyslexic and Asperges too.

I will start by telling you all that I have ASD and am between asperges and dyslexia in the spectrum.
I have found alot of mechinisms to conteract many of my areas of weakness, and have used the benifits of my specific ASD to my advantage where I can.

I know there are alot of us here, I hope you will feel safe to post in here.

First of all, thanks for creating this thread Ascended! I want ASD to be more widely known. This is also a great place for anyone with ASD to discuss what it is like to have it. I hope this thread gets popular because I have a lot to share!

this was a good idea i have asperger syndrome and ADHD and have had to overcome a lot of challenges to become strong in my natural weak points as well as everything else
one of the secrets of living with ASD is as well as improving you weak points to make them strong points make your strong points really strong too and dont be afraid to socialise and never think of yourself as second class at least that works for me although it depends on severeity
you are right ascended there can be some pluses as well as the cons ie intelligence and creativeness in the cases of some with autism as well as high speed in certain aspects and high adreneline with ADHD or at least my experiance of it but there will always be barriors in the way which i will need to beat to be socially accepted as a equal as well as other challenges to beat and keep on beating as well as try to avoid completly cutting myself off from the world

Nice idea for a thread! I don't have Aspergers, which seems pretty common for people with ASD, but a different type called PDD-NOS. It's also sometimes called atypical autism. I'm only 14 and still trying to discover myself, uh, autistic-ly? I don't have an idea on how to say it.

Can people whose family members have ASD join in too?

I have a younger brother who has autism. So far, he's doing just great - apart from forever repeating everything he says like a parrot. I'm really glad Ascended put up this tread, maybe we can bring this matter to light!

Default Re: ASD thread.

I have always thought I was a misdiagnosed case. I've been told that I have ADHD but after reading up on Asperger's Syndrome after a friend's son, (who acted a lot like I did as a child.) was diagnosed, both my mother and I agreed that I seemed to better fit the criteria for an Asperger's than ADHD.

Still, it is a very interesting topic to descuss, both on a personal level and medical.

In school I was put in the Speacial Ed Class, and I actually helped out with a boy suffering from full blown Autism, I would always want to know more about why he would do certain things, (ie involentary hand or head movement or making sounds.) Sadly the staff asigned to work with the boy wasn't all that knowledgable on the subject. (Mine was a small school, with only about 250 kids, and we were in a very rural communtity. In my who 12 year stay there was only ever two cases of diagnosed Autism.)

I know that I personally am interest in hearing and discussing the differant types that fall into this group.

I hope you don't mind me bringing this up, but, what type of ASD does he have?
