Default RPG Jargon Explained

RPG Jargon Translated, or "RPG Terminology for Dummies"

We've all been there: Complete and utter newbs with RPG's. Most of you will know this information already, but I thought it would be nice to have it all spelled out in a post.

OOC: Out of Character
This prefix is used before messages that are intended for the player to say, not the character; it is, in short, you speaking, as yourself, not as your character.

IC: In Character
The opposite of OOC. This is usually to resume “in-character” activities and dialogue after the OOC portion has been concluded.

RP: Role-Playing or Role-Play
This is a simple definition, usually used within the rules or the Character and RPG Registration Worksheets to describe what we do here at Marks-Roms.

BTW: By The Way
A simple abbreviation borrowed from emails and chat rooms. Means what it says.

IMO: In My Opinion
Another abbreviation stolen from emails and chat rooms. This will not usually be used in the actual RP, but rather to express ones opinions.

IMHO: In My Humble Opinion
Basically a stronger version of IMO.

PC: Player Character
A character controlled by another, real player (i.e., there is another person, on another computer, playing his character just like you are).

NPC: Non-Player Character
This one is a bit more complicated. Basically, an NPC is any creature not under direct player control, such as an average citizen walking down the street, a shopkeeper, or the other patrons in the bar you’re in. Many of these characters aren’t of any significance, unless they are specifically interwoven into a plot. NPCs can only be controlled to behave contrary to their established roles by Moderators and myself, and those with special permission.

Thanks to the Allerian Empire for the template for this information
