Default 74th G-View: Kuragehime

Hello and welcome to G-Views, where SoL reigns supreme, moe is respected and Dokuro-chan sucks poopie. Who would have thought Betty la Fea, aka Ugly Betty in the American version, would become so popular in the West. So popular in fact that they somewhat made an anime with a familiar feeling to it. It's not at all the same as the telenovela, but it has some similar themes going for it. In any case, let's get on with the review of Kuragehime.

Alternative title:
Princess Jellyfish
Genres: comedy, romance
Themes: crossdressing, parody
Number of episodes: 11
G-Rating: 8/10

Plot Summary: Amamizukan is an apartment complex where no boys are allowed. Kurashita Tsukimi, a girl who adores jellyfish, lives there happily with her friends who all have nerdy obsessions of their own. Their peaceful lives gradually start to change when a beautiful woman helps Tsukimi out of a pinch. She moves into the apartments -- but it turns out "she" is really a "he."

Don't let the freaky poster fool you, watch the OP instead to get a glimpse of what the characters look like. Oh, and before you all get excited about seeing American movie parodies like those shown in the intro: None of those things happen in the anime, although some American stuff is thrown in once in a while.

Yes, Kuragehime's character art isn't exactly a stroke of genius, but it doesn't need to be. I believe that it is intentionally supposed to be drawn that way. The thing is, it adds depth to the simplistic romantic comedy that it's trying to show. Kuragehime is like a mixture of Ugly Betty (Original Mexican version), Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and female otakus. Mix them up together and you've got a recipe for success. In my opinion, if you want to do romantic comedy, this is a great approach.
So yeah, aside from the main focus being the romantic comedy ( Which are WAY better than the constant wave of harem shows we're flooded with), this show also deals with the Amars (The sisterhood) and their daily otaku lives, which change into a battle against politics in order to save their Apartment building. The humor lies in how the Amars interact with each other and others around them.

Animation: Kuragehime uses a different style than most other colorful shows around this season. It doesn't focus on fanservice, but more on natural appeal or something like that. I can't exactly explain this one. You have to see for yourselves.

Characters:
Tsukimi Kurashita
Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa
Tsukimi is an otaku girl who lives in Tokyo and wants to be an illustrator. Influenced by her late mother, she has a love for all kinds of jellyfish and is quite knowledgeable about them. She is the only resident of Amamizukan who knows Kuranosuke's true gender. Like the other Amars, she has a fear of stylish people and will usually petrify in their presence. Tsukimi has a pet spotted jellyfish named Clara.

Clara the jellyfish:
Voiced by: Sumire Morohoshi
Clara appears during commercial breaks and also to point out rules about the sisterhood, how they "interact" with other people and what not to do or say around them. Currently a new rule is revealed each episode.

Chieko
Voiced by: Kimiko Saito
Chieko is one of the Amars who is the manager of Amamizukan. She is obsessed with dressing in traditional Japanese clothes, such as in a kimono, and collects traditional Japanese dolls.

Mayaya
Voiced by: Akemi Okamura
Mayaya is one of the Amars who is obsessed with Records of Three Kingdoms. She makes constant references to events of that time period and tends to be overly excited and shouts when she speaks.

Banba
Voiced by: Motoko Kumai
Banba is one of the Amars who is obsessed with all kinds of trains. Her 'afro' hair is actually a natural perm.

Jiji
Voiced by: Mamiko Noto
Jiji is one of the Amars who is obsessed with mature, old men.

As for Kuranosuke (the cross dresser), I think it's best for the viewers to find out more about him and his family. It's more fun than to reveal it right away, even though you find out pretty quickly all you need to know about him.

In conclusion: For those who are looking for a romantic comedy that doesn't have any cliche harem/ecchi anime elements in them, then this is what you're looking for. Trust me, even I who doesn't show much interest for romantic stuff in comedies can admit that sometimes, there are shows like this that successfully make me care about the romantic developments. I applaud the writers for that.

That's right. Keep in mind that it was my own choice. That doesn't mean that once you see it, you'll agree with me.

In any case, how do you feel about cross-dressers?

Hehe. That's true! We'll see once I watch it.

Cross-dressers? Mmm... If it's anime it's cute. But if it's in real life, it's scary
