that's true but lots of people who haven't watched any yet don't know what they like......
a person i know for example asked me what to watch first she didn't like Mafia stories or violent things but anime is different so when she saw baccano she liked it a lot...

I think movies like spirited away would be good start I make example from my brother who does not like to watch anime serie but he likes to watch anime movies..because serie usually got questionable stuff on somepoint but movies usually don't got those (weird loking face etc stuff)

Depending on the person's taste, I'd recommend either Death Note or Fairy Tail.

Lupin the Third: Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna is a great more modern example. Some of the best writing in anime, plus a very artistic animation style.

For a Shounen example, One Piece and HxH are my top 2.

Gensomaden Saiyuki...not too long...good action and decent plot.A little comedy on the sides too.

i would recommend Clannad but if the person has patience as many people stop it after 6 episodes because they find it boring...
when i recommend it i keep telling them to watchit till the end and they won'r regret it...
