I'm pretty sure it depends on the university.

I don't know that much. I heard that on average there is around 50% drop out rate for physics. At ETH Zurich, the rate is even higher because of their weird exam system that failures would mean repeating two years.

From what I've heard in my short time at uni, this pretty much hits the nail on the head. I've dropped out of chemistry after very short time and I surely wasn't the only one. One example: At the uni I was enrolled at, 40 people started studying food chemistry. After five years, 8 people were left, they were my instructors in the lab. Science and maths are just very hard subjects, no matter which university you attend. It may be a bit easier at some unis than others though. Drop out rates in these subjects can easily exceed 50%, even reach 75% and higher in some cases (at least where I live).

This is because of the high number of people who have trouble with math and science. There is a minority of people who have difficulty in English (me) and Social sciences. The highest numbers though are in math and science.

What other people have said, Math and Science are pretty much what's kicking the butts of students in America.

From experience, maths in uni is totally different. Seeing number in maths paper is more like a blessing than a bane. The proof-questions can easily make a lot people dumbfounded. I'm not surprised that very few people bachelor students are taking it.

Blue speaks the truth. There was a point where the problems no longer had numbers in them. I have never had so many problems learning something than higher Calc classes.
