Default What's stronger?

I was in deep thought for a few hours and I came up with an intriguing question. I can't seem to think of an answer. So I'll ask you guys. What's stronger, having something to protect or having nothing to lose?

I think it varies from person to person. Some people want to be able to hold themselves together and some people want to feel they have a purpose. I think I'm usually made stronger by having something to lose, but even I have moments when I stand up and become protector. I think a healthier person has elements of the two within them, but it's always interesting to see when which side comes out...

Depends on the Context a person is using.

"Stronger" can refers a someone is above someone else, whether it would be physically, mentally, verbally, etc.

"Stronger" can also refer to something as "becoming stronger to believe in yourself" and such.

Never thought of it that way. Good eye.

I think I thought of an answer. When you have nothing to lose, it's a strong feeling and you're willing to throw yourself into anything without thinking to much of the consequences because you have nothing to lose. When you have something to protect however, there's more of a logical thinking behind it because you're not just living for yourself. You're living for something else also. And you will do whatever you can to protect it meaning you'll think rationally before an action because you know your choices will affect what you are trying to protect. I think mentally, having something to protect is stronger. Physically, I think having nothing to lose is stronger.

Overall i think its always "stronger" in whatever context that it means to have something to protect than having nothing to lose. Its always braver, placing the needs of someone over your own.Thats not something everyone has...Self-preservation is hard-wired into our genes...overcoming that seems easy but in reality..it never is.Everyone has something to lose...even though they think they dont....in basis, everyone has their own life to lose...the phrase "I got nothing to lose" is more of a" machismo" phrase than a stand.Something one says to psyche themselves up...like saying "Geronimo" before you jump off a plane...
Someone who truly believes he/she has "nothing to lose" to me is just plain suicidal. Is it "strong" for someone to blatantly disregard their own safety and others? To me thats just giving up.

It varies upon the environment & person. Having something to protect makes you stronger emotionally & mentally. Having nothing to lose is just emptiness. Someone with Nothing to protect may mean they avoid conflict.

Well, if you have something or someone to protect, you're more likely to properly prepare yourself physiologically as well. Well, in a Shounen at least. That kind of desire is what tends to push the heroes above and beyond.

I would say having something to protect. Because when you have something to protect you will put your all into it and your life. But you will protect that until your last breath and sometimes even after. (example: Protecting a loved one, you get shot, but you get up and keep fighting)

If you have nothing to lose what's keeping you from letting yourself die? You put your all into fighting, you get shot, why get back up? Unless you have a goal you must achieve, but that would be very similar to having something to protect.

But I do agree it depends on the person.

Depends on your definition of stronger?

If you're going with who is likely to have greater willpower? or who has more capabilities? : If someone with nothing to lose is determined to do something, they will do it. If someone with something to protect is determined to do something, they will first need to determine whether or not it endangers what is dear to them and then work around it or do nothing.
