Default Do you think we care more for our pets now than in the past ?

Do you think we care more for our pets now than we did in the past or do we care less? I ask this because charities seem to be overrun with unwanted pets. Why do you think this is? Why when we say we are more civilised do we appear to be unable to care for our pets long term?
Have we become more selfish and only want pets for a 'fashion moment' then we dump them. Or do you find this statement untrue?
Discuss your views around this topic.

e.g. of one view is the Panorama programme which discussed unwanted pets.

''Posted on August 2nd, 2010, someones sample blog;-

Today’s episode of Panorama on BBC One follows the very sad, and alarming story of unwanted pets in Britain. Tom Heap investigates this story through the Battersea Dogs Home, with a shocking insight to the severity of this problem. The rehoming centre had to put down over one third of the dogs they took in last year, just over 2,800 animals, 1,931 of which were fit & healthy.
In a move that sees Battersea releasing it’s figures for the first time since the 90s, the shelter told the BBC programme that they’ve come to the point where enough is enough. Operations Director, Scott Craddock said, “What people are doing to some of these dogs and the state they are coming in to us is completely unacceptable”.

I think people invest more in their pets when it suits them, like spending more on them because it gives themselves enjoyment to see the pets happy, but they also throw them away and neglect them more readily on some similarly selfish whim... like they do with their own kids

Commitment. Most people do not think as caring for pets as a responsibility. They dont when it definitely is.
I am in the middle on this...on one hand,in certain places, treatment of domesticated animals has generally improved with certain places treating pets more than just animals.Like in Japan wear pet cafes and cemetaries are abound.

On the other hand, other places have seen the pets degenerated into a "Good time" companion being abandoned and thrown away when the going gets toughs resulting in huge numbers of feral animals.

This varries. As a whole past and present? Or within groupings of people? In the past ages animals were of high importance. Most of which was substaining life. Certain animals were coddled and others merely cared for until their worth was met then begin the cycle again with the youth. Indians cared greatly for all animals and life(And I speak for the natives and those of India.) and animals to this day are revered in certain areas. Though nowadays anyone can obtain a pet of a wide variety and for the most part you never hear much wrong doing(aside from certain cases.) I believe as a whole throughtout the world the love and care for animals has met an increase. Though not a healthy one. As you can see more animals are kept entirely at home, and trained(like guide dogs) in ways that hinder their natural instinct. Did you know dogs whom guide the blind are most likely to die first if left alone? As they are trained away from instinct to be and form packs with fellow dogs.
