Default Thinking and Action

i get inspired by my subject soicail psychology so i put this up.

Well german poet Goethe once said,

"Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one's thoughts into action, the most difficult thing in the world."

In Social Psychology, Often people behave differently to their attitude. Ex. A Person has this attitude about cleanliness and really want to put the garbage in the trash but when he saw a man throwing his empty bottle of juice in the road he didn't pick it and put it on the trash.

So what is you're opinion about this? why do you think the poet has said those? Why is it hard for a person to do what he had think to do.

I think it's because we think that if others don't do it, then why should we? Or if it's not ours, then why bother?

Pebbles has a pretty good answer.
But i also think because subconciously due to exposure from various media, especially TV or movies,We all have this line of thinking that anything is possible.
In reality to carry out what we think is never easy.we often lack the courage, drive or passion to do it.In the case of the littering incident, what Dustpebbles wrote is a perfect answer.
But when it concerns ourselves.we are a bit more subceptible to doing it out but even this is not foolproof.Say for example,a guy sees a pretty girl on the street. In his mind he really think that girl is beautiful and wants to get to know her but how many would actually do it?Less than 50% maybe.
Our minds conveys thoughts that sometimes overcome phsyical limitation. If the risk factor is too great,we almost always dismiss them.

Pebbles has a good point, but I also think it's a question about how we've been raised.

Example: The rich man son never laid a finger on anything, so why would he bother? There's people to do the job.
A environmentalist would say different.

Of course, there's always an exception that breaks the rule.

Yep, I agree. It depends on how strong your thinking about something is.
An enviromentalist acts because he/she knows and believes at things more than some of us do, thus giving them enough push to turn their thoughts to action.

I had a discussion with a friend about this subject and I was thinking that its easy to just act and make things happen. They said before this can happen a person has to think this into reality.

Another famous writer and therapist in the New Age arena called Louise Hay believed affirmations brought about changes in real life because the thinking pattern was changed by saying the positive affirmation daily.

I think that after trying out some affirmations whilst sat on the tube going to work, when there is time to spare ,it really does work. I also think by imagining the situation to be better and thinking through how something can become possible,it can work.

However the key thing is you have to have the self discipline to say the affirmation, think the idea and the taking action is easier. There will always be a small percentage that has to be the action. You can have 99% thought but one percent action and it can work. But you do need both.
Very good thread, I must say.

I think that it's really easy to think 'Ah c'mon, litter shouldn't be on the floor. I should go pick it up.' But, to actually go across the road to empty it, would make you wonder what people will think about you. People hate repercussions, and what they hate more is the fact that people might talk about you, and a lot of people hate it, agreeing with what I said previously.

True.
Sometimes we care about our "image" more than our morals sometimes. We know and think that we should do it but when it comes to tainting our image or social preception of ourselves, our motor functions tends to betray us.

a lot of people are like that, including me. we should stop thinking like that and instead, say, if we want to do it, we do it.
