Default Teachers spying on students - Invasion of Privacy?

I heard a news about Teachers giving away laptop to students in order for them to do their work, but turns out that teachers are watching them through webcam. I didn't think about making a thread about this, but seeing a video on youtube, I've decided to make a thread and talk about how members react.

I put this in the Political Discussion because I find this as a Invasion of
Privacy.

Is it right for teacher to watch the students through webcams?
Is it an invasion of privacy?
Are spying technologies expanding and improving as year goes on? Are "invasion of privacy" increasing?

The laptop (free laptop that is...) are given to students so that they can do their work, but what the students did not know is that they are being spied by teacher. I believed the teacher is messaging students to do their work, or that what I think the laptop is for.

Spying on students may be invasion of privacy, but possible explicit nudity result in child pornography.

Even though this is in one school, it said that the principle perhaps have been testing if this technology work, which is a complete success. So another topic, is invasion of privacy on the rise? When I heard China installed firewall on every computers at China, I found it as a fearsome terror if China were to spy on everyone at China.

School Cyber-Spies on Students

BBC News - US school accused of web spying:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...on/8523807.stm

boingboing.net - School used student laptop webcams to spy on them at school and home:
http://boingboing.net/2010/02/17/sch...d-student.html

In conclusion: It said the webcam was activated because someone stole the laptop so they can catch the thief, but in my opinion, they already had a device that can spy on students. We all should agree that 100% of the teachers and administrators are not good. I think if they want to prevent laptop from being stolen illegally, they should put an alarm device in the laptop, and if driven out, it will start the alarm (something like that).

damn lol, thats just scary. Upon the realization that i'm being put on display for someone else's freaky voyeur fetishes i would have to spend all the money possible to find the people responsible and video record their private lives and go ahead and post it all over the internet in spite.
But if a shows what they really want, I'd absolutely want to have to go out and spend all the money possible to find out the private residence's of these people's home's, also their relatives home's and their children's schools, and make stupid you tube videos with me and my friends in front of their house as a warning...i hope they're watching at that point Do unto others what others would do unto you *winks*

This is Illegal, Immoral and a SCHOOL has no right to do this!

what are the school hoping to acheive?

I'm glad you raised this on here, because another forum I was on just posted "one call, the school's teachers are on a register"-esc comments.

But yes, it does seem that when US orginisations or people are yelling at another nation's laws on various matters, they are sitting on a cess-pit of bad morals and stupidity

Unbelievable, first off i would say that this is immoral in the least. It is most definately wrong for teachers to be doing such a thing. What justification do they have for doing this?I cannot see any reason why such a measure would be undertaken, its a definate invasion of privacy.

If its within school grounds then maybe it does have justification but if we are talking about the students bringing the laptop home and getting spied on when in their own homes, its blatant espionage.

Its a scary thing when it becomes so easy for the normal "Jane" or 'Joe" can purchase spy equipment that is readly avaiable.Things that you thought you only see the paparazzi or even James Bond would use.Technology can be a dangerous thing when used to the wrong ends. This is just of its examples.

I honestly don't see the difficulty over this issue. I don't care whether the parents authorized it or not. Nobody has a right to spy on an individual without their knowing of it, and it doesn't matter if it is being done to teens, adults, or the elderly. Anyone caught with this act should face conviction and a lengthy time in prison, without any television or laptop of their own, which they have shown they readily abuse. This goes the same for the government as well.

Its a definite invasion of privacy no doubt.I am sure a major lawsuit is in order for this.
Since those laptops are given away for free,a lot of students are sure to jump on that oppurtunity. Not everyone can afford there own laptops. Its the classic "fish lure" technique.Dangle something in we all want and most would bite.

If it was written or part of the clause that those with said laptops are going to be monitored and if those students has a choice in the matter then maybe its a little justifiable but since this is all done is complete oblivious to the students. Its a complete breach of ethics on the school's part.

I think this is unacceptible behaviour on the schools part.We all have our right to privacy.Even celebrities whose live revolves around the spotlight is unhappy when people starts spying and all that. They always say to respect their privacy.

I think its very unethical that the school would enforce such actions just to spy on students. If i was in the studenst shoes,i would definitely take it up with the authorities.

I agree with most of the people who have replied here. Clearly the school has violated the student's right to privacy and that should never be done. It's unethical - and the reasons the school is giving to justify their actions are ridiculous. It's not like the sutdents are sending off a dangerious computer virus or hacking someone's account or the government's private and classifed data.

Though it would be useful to detect students checking out porn or any any illegal activities or cyber-bullying another student at the same school, but it is highly unlikely.

I wouldn't be surprised if this case is brought up to the authorities, because it is just unacceptable.

It seems really outta there for me.Over here if any school is guilty ofdoing any spying,i cant even imagine the repercussion of it.Since most of the schools here are government run,it would be a big issue indeed.
