I'd love to see ball lightning without getting hit by it. But as for invisible tornadoes, I have to say that I agree that not only do they exist, but happen more frequently than what people think. Now I'm not talking about dust devils. I'm talking about tornadoes that you can't see but you can see the damage that they are doing. I've witnessed tops of trees being twisted off by some invisible force. Also while that was happening, pieces of the siding to my trailer were being pulled off while it felt as if the trailer was being plucked up off of it's foundation. You could hear the roar of the wind, but couldn't see anything except the destruction that was being done. I watched two extremely large trees being ripped up from the ground next door as well. And my large trash can was just picked up and tossed across the yard as easily as someone tossing a tennis ball. Lasted only a few minutes, but scared the hell out of us.

wow. I've never seen one of those. I like the part about going to investigate and getting flung 500 feet, it sounded funny to me for some reason. You can actually find videos of ball lighting on youtube.....terrible quality though >.<

In the first article I can say I have heard about ball lightning and my next door neighbours experienced it coming down their chimney and travelling to the left of the room and blasting a hole through the wall as it went on its path. They were terrified and really upset. They explained thats why the bricks outside on the wall dont match.

You will be happy to know they werent hurt and lived to a ripe old age.

The lumps of ice coming out of the sky is not a surpirse and I think it would be weird but copable.Well so long as it didnt hit me. I have experienced really big hailstones so I guess this is just an extreme of that.

really? I hope they didn't have to pay too much for damage.

Yeah, it's awkward that they fall in the dead of summer though. Winter is understandable, but summer is unexpected.

Quite an interesting read on both articles.
Both the chances of any of those 5 ways to happen to is remote at best.Yes ball lightning, hailstorms of ice and animals have been recorded of happening throught history.
But the chances of of not so bizzare ways that weather can kill is more immnient.I am talking about the Tsunamis, the hurricanes, the tornados and earthquakes that happens all across the world on a more regular basis.I think there is a higher chance of someone being caugh up on a tornado than being struck by hailstorm of huge ice crystals and we have more danger from acid rain than being rained upon by Jellyfish.

We didnt even know about plasma untill 10 years ago, and didnt know a plasma lightning strike goes up from the ground first, then the electricity follows the path back down in the visible lightning we see.

Thees lots to learn yet.

Yeah there is still much to be researched on this topic of plasma lightning and invisible tornados.
There is certainly scientific ways to explain how they come about but as for now it remains a mystery.

I find all this fascinating and I love to learn about the storms and the lightning stuff. I have watched a lot of those programmes where people chase after the storm or the tornado and get a buzz out of being so close to the powerful energy.

You know the crazy thing is I live in Northern California, sunny and always warm right? Recently we've had like this ungodly amount of rain this winter, like more rain than I've ever remembered it could be like. "Reports of record breaking levels for the area's..." is what i keep hearing on the radio as I'm trying to drive my car safely while there's a thunderstorm out. Then a couple weeks ago certain areas in the east bay got their first ever reports of tornadoes...wtf?!? yea so tornadoes in California now lol...i'm very confused. Earthquakes and Tornadoes? I'm moving to Amsterdam if things get bad.

Getting more on topic, have you guys seen some of the pics of colored lightening above the clouds? So beautiful! They form in enormous halo's and giant colums going out to space. I saw it on a national geographic show one day but I can't find any good sites or pics atm. They had like satellite videos that were so gorgeous. like regular lightening exists in the troposphere, basically where the thunder heads are, then above that is the Stratosphere where some of the colored lightening exist like "blue Jets" that reach up to the Mesosphere. But the crazy one was the "red Sprites" that go up and out to the space and form Halo's.

ooOOooO found a good vid! look how the cam is one the ground, you see a halo in mid air, kinda like fire works, then everything gets brights and something shoots up. the national geographic vids i saw were ones from the air that were in HD and beautiful, gimme a sec, watch this for now.
